Roundhay School’s Duke of Edinburgh’s award programme has established itself as an important form of enrichment for a targeted group of enthusiastic students. Each year we offer Year 9 pupils the opportunity to participate in the bronze award and Year 12 pupils (many of whom are new to Roundhay) the chance to challenge themselves on the slightly more demanding silver award.

A committed team of Roundhay staff organise campcraft training and help pupils with their route planning in preparation for the exciting and challenging expedition section. Expeditions vary in length of time and difficulty of terrain based on the award level; it is critical that pupils work together as a team to overcome the demands of being self-sufficient in the great outdoors. Pupils can look forward to visiting spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District. However, don’t be fooled; exposure to elements in often the harshest of conditions will test even the most resilient young explorer. Traditionally, this experience brings out the best in terms of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

In addition to the expedition section both award levels involve a weekly commitment to a physical, skilled and voluntary activity over a chosen timeframe. This is designed to encourage young people to undertake a variety of extra-curricular activities and perhaps even try something new. Each activity approved by DofE has the potential to increase confidence, bed in essential life skills and create enjoyable memories that will last a lifetime. It is our aim to provide pupils with a character-building experience that allows pupils to benefit from all that the prestigious, world renowned, DofE award has to offer.
