Career insights & Taster Opportunities

We have a huge variety of careers events, trips, visits and opportunities to provide our students with a range of high-quality experiences and information advice and guidance.  Here is a sample of some of the opportunities students can access during their Sixth Form journey:

Our CEE team run 2 major careers events in school bi-annually: The Health, medicine and Wellbeing event and our Manufacturing, Engineering and Digital Tech Showcase. These careers fairs are attended by 40+ professionals and are an opportunity for students and parents/carers to speak directly to specialists and find out more about careers within Leeds’ major growth sectors.

Y12 Careers Speed-Networking We welcome 40+ business volunteers from 25+ organisations to speak to our students on rotation about careers and opportunities within their industries.

National Careers Week 2023

Y12 Routes into Engineering showcase With 100+ students in Year 12 studying Maths/Physics A Levels this event provides students with an insight into engineering and how the industry relates to their subjects. The event included presentations from 4 local institutions on routes in, including apprenticeships, degrees and technical qualifications. This was followed by an engineering careers carousel where students spoke to 32 representatives from the world of engineering.

National Apprenticeship Week 2023

Alumni talk Several of our students progress onto apprenticeships every year, and we invite these alumni students back each National Apprenticeship WEEK. Lanre, who left Roundhay in 2021 and went on to a digital marketing apprenticeship at the Jamie Oliver Group gave a talk on: “My early career in the Digital, Creative and Advertising industry: Alternatives to Uni”

West Yorkshire Police talk On the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship and a really interesting insight into careers within the police

Sixth Form Mooting Competition

This 8-week competition in the Autumn term is in collaboration with the University of Leeds and local Barristers Chambers for Y12 students to learn the skills to debate, challenge, and construct arguments, along with many of the key elements of the legal and many other professions. Students are trained by local Barristers and mentored by the University of Leeds Law students on a weekly basis and go head to head with other schools in front of a judge. We were absolutely delighted to win this year’s competition, congratulations Team Roundhay!

Raised in Yorkshire oral health project Leeds School of Dentistry

Our Year 12 prospective dentists and medics are working on an exciting scientific research project with the University of Leeds School of Dentistry. Trained by dental professionals over two conference days, our students have become ‘Oral Health Experts’ and will be delivering sessions on oral health to our Year 7 students, in the hope that this peer to peer intervention can improve Yorkshire’s oral health. Our Year 12 students have had the opportunity to assist the dental team with saliva sampling and dental exams, and will be delivering the workshops to  Year 7 in the summer term. A fantastic experience for everyone involved!

Independent one to one careers meetings

In the summer term of Year 12, all students are offered a 121 careers meeting with an external Careers Adviser. Meetings take place in school, over a three week period and give students the opportunity to speak one-to-one with an independent careers specialist about future plans, explore options after Sixth Form, and come away with a detailed action plan.
