Girls Netball 2017-18

The netball teams have had an extremely successful year both in the league and tournaments. The continued participation and attendance at club has been fantastic, well done for all the hard work and commitment shown by every player this season.

Having so many year 7 pupils attending practice has meant that we were able to have two year 7 teams.  Several of our under 12A team had played at primary school and on the same team, meaning they gelled really quickly and set off to a flying start in the league beating Garforth 9-0.  This theme continued throughout the year only being beaten once in the league and the U12A team were crowned division 2 winners in Leeds! They will progress to division one next year.  Meanwhile the U12B showed great promise and improved throughout the year winning both their friendly matches.

The U12s were lucky to be able to play their invitational tournament at home.  Both team performed extremely well with the B team narrowly missing out for a place in the knock out stages, whilst the A team got through to the semi-finals only to be narrowly beaten by the eventual winners.

Three of our U12 girls, Maggie Ruston, Charlotte Bell and Libby Whaley-Elson,  trialled and made it into the Leeds District Netball team, a huge congratulations must go to these girls as the standard of netball needed to gain a place in the team is extremely high.  Alongside these girls Tyeesha Willock (U13) and Josie Gorton (U14) have played for the district teams this year with Evie Murphy playing for the Satellite Leeds teams, well done girls!

The U13 team have had a phenomenal year of netball.  They have played well together and developed as a team.  They remain unbeaten in all league matches and in the invitational tournament.  Throughout the whole season they have only lost one match to Woodhouse Grove A team in the league tournament making them one of the top 4 teams for netball in the city!  The girls won the league having scored 167 goal across 7 games and conceding less than 30 goals! Showing that the team is strong in both attack and defence! The U13 invitational tournament provided a challenge from PHGS in the final game however Roundhay were again crowned overall winners for the second year in a row.  I am very excited to see the progress that these girls will continue to make next year in division one of the league.

The U14 netball team continued to have success from last year and have won every one of their friendly matches.  The team made fantastic progress in the Benfield Ford cup, narrowly missing out a place in the final to Woodhouse Grove.  The game was one of the best displays of netball and resilience I have seen from the team.  The league tournament was a similar success beating all of the teams in their group stages and again narrowly missing out in the quarter finals.  The girls have come together this year and have developed their skills ready for re-joining the league next year, we look forward to seeing if they can match the success from the previous year and win the league; fingers crossed!

Finally to the sixth form senior team.  It has been an absolute pleasure to be able to take these girls to the tournament and the fixtures.  Despite not training together the girls have played in the senior league and finished third making them the most successful state school for netball in Leeds.  Particular highlights were beating GSAL and Guiseley in the Leeds schools tournament.  Well done girls.

Overall this has been Roundhay’s most successful year ever for netball, thank you to everyone that has played or helped out! Miss Armstrong is already looking forward to next year and having just as much success if not even more!
