Boys Rugby 2017-18

With our sign up to the RFU broadening reach program this has enabled us to provide quality Rugby throughout the year in PE lessons and at extra-curricular clubs. Our KS3 club has been extremely well attended with some weeks 35-40 students turning up for training on a Tuesday. With support from RFU coaches we have now got a coach to come down and start back up girls training as well. This will continue for the girls throughout the summer term on a Tuesday. With the support of the RFU we have been able to send students to masterclasses at Leeds Carnegie to help further their development.

In the white rose festivals the year 7s have had an excellent season winning the majority of their games. This culminated in the festival of Rugby at West Park where they were unbeaten in the tournament. They look forward to the Yorkshire Cup next year to see if they can continue their progression. The year 8s, although showing great commitment to training, have had mixed fortunes in the White Rose Festivals coming on the losing side more regularly than the winning one. It has been great to see an improvement throughout the year and also a couple of players be selected for the year 9 team in Yorkshire Cup games.

The Year 9s have had a successful year winning the majority of their games in the White Rose Festivals and getting through to the second round of the Yorkshire cup with a comfortable win against Bedale. They came up against a strong Ilkley side and kept the game tight for the first half. In the end Ilkley ended up winning by 35 points to 15.  Several players in the year 9 team have had great success for their club side. 3 students have won the Yorkshire Cup with West Park for the 4th Year in a row and two of these boys completed the double by winning the Yorkshire Cup with Stanningley at Rugby League.

The season ended with the annual Ilkley 7s tournament which was entered by the year 9s and 10s. Although the tournament ended in defeat for both teams there was some good rugby played and fun had by all.

Overall Rugby continues to go from strength to strength and I look forward to seeing the year 7s and 9s in County and National competitions next year to see how they fare.
