Roundhay Pupils Loved Debate Mate

On March 29th, the teams took part in the final competition of the year: the Debate Mate Cup, at Leeds Beckett University. Pupils debated on issues ranging from the UK's funding for space exploration to the promotion of crime in music.

They faced some talented teams from other schools across the city and gleaned so much from other teams' performances, as well as making connections with passionate and driven people from across the city. Although the teams didn't quite make it to the grand final, both scored very well. In fact, the two teams who reached the final had both been beaten by one of our teams at some point during the day! Our A Team came fourth overall (out of fourteen) which was a fantastic achievement. Brannoc and Harry's Tweets about the competition were also particularly successful, and included a very flattering shot of Mr Burkill.

More than anything, Debate Mate has given our teams both the skills and the opportunities to express themselves. At Roundhay, we know that we've got the leaders, innovators and role models of the future. If you're an ambitious Roundhay pupil, there's a space for you in Debate Mate - come along and join us!
